Lady Spartans Fall Short at Sub-Districts

November 01, 2022

The Lady Spartans played on October 24th in Elgin for sub-district play as the 4th seed.  The first match of the night was vs #5 seeded Creighton.  Boyd County came out strong and played consistently throughout the match, in what may have been their most complete sets all season.  Scrappy play and tough serving were hard on the Bulldogs all night.  Spartans won in 3, 25-14, 25-20, 25-11.

Serving up aces were Mazee Johnson with 2, Paige Drueke and Amelia Hoffman each added 1 apiece.  Johnson and Brynn Almgren each had 11 service points.  Tough attacking was led by Hoffman with 10 and sophomore Addison Birmeier had a great night adding 10 kills, Johnson recorded 6.  Creighton had a tough time with our blocking as Leah Jockens had 4, and adding 3 each were Johnson, Almgren and Birmeier.  Drueke ran the 5-1 offense and notched 23 set assists.  Playing tough defense and grabbing digs were Lanie Lechtenberg with 15, Hoffman 14 and Drueke 13.

After sitting one 5 set match between the #2 and #3 seeds, Boyd County faced #1 seed EPPJ for a chance to move on in sub-district play.  The Wolfpack had an easy 3 set win over BC in early September.  Lady Spartans were confident they could play with EPPJ.  BC did just that and saw some long rallies with competitive play on both sides of the net.  In the end, EPPJ served tough which took BC out of system often and blocked well to make it difficult for our hitters.  BC almost grabbed the third set from the eventual sub-district winner, but lost in 3 sets, 14-25, 17-25, 22-25.  BC was out aced by 4, but did have 6 on the night (2-Birmeier, 1 each Lechtenberg, Hoffman, Johnson, Drueke).  Drueke set up a lot of balls grabbing 14 assists.  Drueke also played scrappy right back defense and had 17 digs, with Johnson adding 12 and Hoffman 10.  Leading the charge with attacks was Hoffman recording 10, Jockens and Johnson each added 4.  Blocking at the net helped slow their strong hitters, with Jockens 7, Birmeier 5, Drueke 3 and Almgren 2.

The Lady Spartans ended the season with a record of 8-22.  The record is certainly not indicative of the work these ladies put in and how much they improved along the way.  Having faced tough opponents with returning varsity experience, Boyd County was better than their record showed.  Lady Spartans look to improve next season as the majority of the team returns.

Amelia Hoffman, Leah Jockens, and Nevaeh Jockens will be missed greatly.  We thank them for their time and commitment to Spartan Volleyball.
