Lady Spartans Bring Home Gregory Tournament Plaque
On Saturday Sept 7th the Boyd County Lady Spartan Volleyball team participated in the Gregory VB Tournament. The BC team started pool play against the St. Francis High school team. In this match the Spartans came out serving tough and were able to claim a 25-8. 25-16 victory. Lauryn Hoffman had 6 kills and Kalli Kayl had 4 in this match to lead the way. Audrey Mohr had 6 ace serves.The second match of the tournament was against a very tall Chamberlain team. The roster showed 3 girls 5'11" or better. Knowing that they would have to dig and serve well to control the Chamberlain team, they went to work and did just that. Mariah Smalley had 14 digs as did Hoffman and Hannah Drueke had 9. The accurate serving kept the Chamberlain team out of system most of the match. Kalli Kayl and Daydra Zeisler lead the attacking with 6 and 5 kills respectfully. The out come was a 25-21, 25-21 victory. The third match was against the team from Lyman H.S. The Spartans won this one 25-20,25-14. Kalli and Lauryn had 7 kills each and Daydra had 5. Alex Brestel and Hannah Drueke accounted for 24 and 23 set assists in the first three matches with Haylie Carson chipping with 6. On the right side the steady play of Heather Atkinson helped the team finish pool play 3-0. This brought the BC team to the championship match against the home Gregory Team.
This match started off with the visiting Spartans totally out of it. Serving was poor and several first serves went out of bounds, Attacks were long or into the net. Players were in the net and balls were dropping between players who were looking at each other. Result, a 17-25 loss. With their backs against the wall in a 2 out of 3 match,The girls rallied to turn the match even with a 25-18 win. In this set, The setting and attacking was near perfect, off of great passing to get the win. Alex, Heather and Hannah combined for 11 assists while the team had 14 kills, and 15 digs. The Third set was all Spartans as they won the set 25-13, and took home the Championship Plaque.
