Boyd County Basketball Comes to a Close

March 02, 2020

The Boyd County Spartans topped off Plainview in the opening round of the D1-5 sub-district tournament in Neligh on February 23. The Spartans attacked the aggressive Pirate team to finish with a solid 50-38 victory. The game was tight the entire night as the Spartans were up by 2 points at halftime. With just 6 minutes to go in the game, Boyd County only led by 3 points but solid free throw shooting through the final quarter, including 2 from Joseph Hiatt and 6 from Colby Hansen, sealed the win. Boyd County was strong on the boards with 29 rebounds. Jory Zeisler led the scoring column with 17 points and Hansen put up 16. Zeisler also recorded 8 rebounds and Hiatt had 7. Hiatt was also able to pass for 6 assists.

On Tuesday, the Spartans challenged the 23-1 Osmond Tigers. The Spartans fell earlier in the season to Osmond 29-60. The Tigers started the game with immense pressure, getting up 16-3 at the end of the first period. The Spartans answered back, outscoring the Tigers 20-11 in the second quarter. At the conclusion of the third quarter, the game was tied at 33 points. In the final period, the Tigers were able to restrict the Spartan offense and developed an offensive rhythm to claim the 52-41 win, ending Boyd County’s season. Boyd County fought extremely hard throughout the entire game. The Spartans ended their season with a very challenging game and one they can be proud of competing in. Colby Hansen managed to score 19 points and Joseph Hiatt followed with 8.

The Spartans walk away from the 2019-20 season with a host of accomplishments. They finish with a 10-13 record, a Creighton Holiday Tournament Runner-Up finish, Colby Hansen reaching 1,000 career points, and a number of close and hard-fought battles. Returning only 1 starter from last year’s squad, Boyd County developed a lot of players and filled many roles. The leading scorers on the year were Hansen (440) and Zeisler (177) . The top two rebounders were Hansen (190) and Hiatt (129). In the assists column, the leader was Hiatt (68) and second was Koenig (41). Hiatt and Hansen also led on the defensive end by collecting the most steals (46). The area of blocked shots was led by Hiatt (23) and Hansen (17). The JV squad finished the year with a solid 9-5 record. The team’s scoring leaders were Kirwan (104), Atkinson (89), and McBride (76). The rebounding leaders were Rihanek (70), Kirwan (59), and McBride (56). The Spartans had many players contribute in a variety of ways throughout both the JV and Varsity seasons.
