Spartans Split Games

Spartans Split Games

On December 20th, the Spartan basketball squad hit the road to take on the Riverside Chargers which is made up by Spalding and Cedar Rapids. Riverside, the 2019 3rd place finisher at the state tournament, struggled to produce on the offensive end against the Spartan’s tough matchup zone throughout the first half. In the second half, the Chargers shot lights-out from beyond the arch and pulled away from Boyd County. The Spartans continued to bring pressure but slowly got further behind throughout the second half. The Spartans performed one of their best matches all season, recording only 14 turnovers, shooting 78% from the charity stripe, and staying clear of foul trouble. The offensive execution for the Spartans was once again led by Colby Hansen as he scored a season-high 28 points and Joseph Hiatt kicked in 6 assists to the offensive efforts. Hiatt and Hansen again led the team in rebounds, capturing 6 each.

On the 21st, Boyd County were scheduled to play Elgin Public/Pope John in Spencer. The Spartans played solid on both ends throughout the whole game and led by 7 points at the half. The aggressive Wolfpack defense caused some disruption to the offensive rhythm for the Spartans putting bringing the lead within 3 points late in the final quarter. The key late in the game was free throws, including 2 from Kannin Ellwanger, 2 from Cory Koenig, and 6 from Joseph Hiatt to seal the win. The offensive attack was very balanced with eight scorers and 14 points coming off of the bench. Jory Zeisler led the Spartans with 11 points as well as Hiatt and Ellwanger each with 9. Colby Hansen also pulled down 8 boards and Grant Kirwan and Joseph Hiatt earned 7 apiece.
