State XC


On Friday, October 19, 2018 Austin tied up his cross country shoes along with 142 Class D boys for the State race in Kearney. Austin settled into the 5,000 meter race and sat in the mid twenties position throughout most the race. But with less than 100 meters to go, Koenig found his sprint and passed several runners to place him in 21st with a time of 18:15. Congratulations Austin on a great finish to end your cross country career!

Boyd County Cross Country would like to thank our parents, grandparents, and other friends and relatives who have cheered us on this season. To our parents especially, thank you for food and drinks after meets, popsicles on hot run days, and for all you do for us. We would also like to thank the Butte Golf Course again for generously letting us host our home meet this season and once again to all of you who help run that meet.

State XC Bound


Austin, a Boyd County senior, competing in his first and only season of cross country, punched his ticket to state with a 9th place finish at Districts.  Austin will compete at the state meet in Kearney on Friday, October 19 at 1:00PM.  Congrats on a great season!

The Boyd County Spartan cross country team loaded a bus and head to the District D-3 course at Skyview Lake in Norfolk on Thursday, October 11, 2018.  At districts the top three teams and top fifteen individuals earn the right to compete at the state meet.

Conditions were calm and a cool 46 degrees as 64 girls lined up to start the girls’ varsity race.  Senior Axell Bosio led the Lady Spartans coming in 30th with a 23:56 time.  Junior Ashley Hausmann finished 50th in 27:05.  Sophomores Andrea Hipke and Kaci Mashino came in 51st and 52nd respectively with 27:19 and 27:28 times.  Emma Stahlecker, senior who has competed since 7th grade, completed her last race in 55th with a 28:10.  Congrats to Stahlecker on a great cross country career!  Lorena Aluas, senior, finished out her first cross country season in 60th with a 31:22.

The boys lined up 99 runners to being their race.  Senior Austin Koenig, competing in his first and only season of cross country, punched his ticket to state with a 9th place finish.  Fellow seniors Cory Lechtenberg and Evan Reiman finished their cross country careers in 21st in 18:51 and 28th in 19:19 places respectively.  Both Lechtenberg and Reiman have also competed since their 7th grade year.  Congrats to them on an outstanding cross country careers!  Sophomore Isaac Koenig finished in 40th with 19:48.  Senior Kody Roth, also a cross country participant since 7th grade, rounded out his career in 55th with 20:33.  Congrats to Roth on a great and memorable cross country career!  Brayden Almgren, sophomore, ran through the chute in 86th with a 22:09.

Nebraska State Junior High XC Meet



On Saturday, October 6th Natasha laced up her shoes again to compete in the 3000 meter Nebraska State Junior High Meet.  She competed in Papillion in the Championship division against roughly 240 girls, in all classes, from around the state.

The Spartan cross country team loaded the bus to head to the Niobrara Valley Conference meet in sunny, calm, mid 60’s weather. But Mother Nature laughed as they got closer to Bassett and a cold, ugly wind started blowing from the north. This did not deter the Spartans as they earned some medals, some season personal bests, and brought home not one but two team plaques.

The Lady Spartans were the first to brave the course. Senior Axell Bosio crossed the line in 23:11 earning her the 6th place medal. Kaci Mashino, sophomore, also brought home hardware. She received the 15th place medal in a 26:56. Crossing the finish line just after Mashino was teammate Ashley Hausmann, junior. Hausmann placed 16th with a 27:27 time. Andrea Hipke, sophomore and senior Emma Stahlecker followed their teammates into the chute coming in 17th and 18th with times of 27:28 and 28:38 respectively. Lorena Acua, senior, ran a season personal best with a 31:32 time placing her in 20th. The Lady Spartans brought home the NVC runner-up plaque. The championship plaque went to the Lady Huskies from West Holt.

On the boys’ side, Austin Koenig, senior, ran a smart, strong race keeping on the shoulder of Cole Belitz, senior from Neligh-Oakdale. Koenig and Belitz ran almost the entire race together, but in the end Koenig earned the runner-up spot with a time of 18:02, just eight seconds behind Belitz who ran 17:54. Cory Lechtenberg, senior, also ran a good race. He finished 9th in 19:18. Fellow senior, Evan Reiman also competed well landing in 12th place in 19:28. Sophomore Isaac Koenig earned the 14th place medal in 19:35. Kody Roth, senior, placed 24th in 21:04, and Brayden Almgren, sophomore, ran 27th in 21:34. This group of varsity runners also came home with the runner-up NVC plaque. The boys’ championship plaque went home with a tough Huskie team from West Holt.

The junior varsity runners for Boyd County competed hard in their last race of the season. Sophomore Joshua Kersch placed 37th with a 22:17, one of his best times this season. Junior Joseph Hiatt crossed the line in 40th position in 22:48 time. Nathan Kaczor, junior, finished in 45th place with a 23:27 time. Trevor Brooks, sophomore, also had one of his best races on the season. He placed 48th with a 24:20 time.

In the junior high division, 8th grader Natasha Zeisler placed 2nd with a 10:49 on the 2,500 meter course, and 7th grader Zoe Kaczor braved the wind placing 18th in 14:05.


O’Neill XC Meet

The Spartan Cross Country team headed to the O’Neill Country Club on Friday, Sept 14th for the third meet in 8 days.  Not only is O’Neill the biggest meet they’ve competed in this season, but it was also the hottest.

Girls’ varsity and junior varsity lined up on the line to start the competition.  58 girls crossed the finish line.  Axell Bosio, senior, brought home the 15th place medal with a 23:36 time.  Bosio competed well with the area runners she competes with in other meets.  38th place was assigned to Kaci Mashino, sophomore, as she crossed the finish with a 30:09 time.  Junior Ashley Hausmann placed 39th in 30:41.  Senior Emma Stahlecker beat the heat for 40th with a 30:53, and sophomore Andrea Hipke found 42nd in 31:04.  The Lady Spartans finished 7th as a team overall.

Next, a field of over 100 runners lined up to compete in the boys varsity and JV division.  Senior Austin Koenig earned himself the 8th place medal running the course in 18:28.  Evan Reiman, senior, competed hard and landed in 21st with a 20:04 time.  Isaac Koenig, sophomore, raced through the chute in 39th place with a 21:16 time.  Fellow sophomore Brayden Almgren ran 22:28 for 57th place.  Kody Roth, senior, rounded out the varsity squad in 65th in 23:59.  The team finished 6th.

The JV field saw Spartan runner Nathan Kaczor, junior, in 19th place with a 25:15.  23rd went to Joshua Kersch, sophomore, with a 25:41 time.  Fellow sophomore Trevor Brooks clocked a time of 26:50 and finished 29th.

Junior High runner Natasha Zeisler, 8th grade, found herself coming home with more hardware.  She grabbed 11th place on the 2000 meter course in 7:05.  Zoe Kaczor, 7th grade, came in 55th out of 66 runners in 9:18.  7th grader Nathan Koenig found himself competing with 58 other junior high boys.  He placed 21st with a 7:03 time.

Shout out to the bartender in the club house who was handing out cups of ice water to thirsty runners.  We appreciate your kindness!  The Spartans will compete again on Thursday, Sept 20th in Creighton and the following Thursday, Sept 27th in Atkinson.

Neligh XC Meet

Monday, Sept 10 meant the Spartan XC team jumped on a bus and headed to Neligh for the Neligh Invite.  The teams made a good showing coming home with not one but two team plaques and twelve medals!

The Lady Spartans were lead in the chute by senior Axell Bosio.  She crossed the line in 5th place with a 22:08 time.  Sophomore Kaci Mashino left it on the course with her 13th place finish in 25:09.  She was followed by Ashley Hausmann, junior, and Andrea Hipke, sophomore who finished three seconds apart in 14th and 15th places respectively.  Hausmann clocked in at 25:42 and Hipke in 25:45.  Senior Emma Stahlecker stopped the clock at 26:10 for 16th place.  Lorena Aluas, senior, finished in 19th with a 35:22.  All these ladies brought home medals as the top 20 medalled.  The girls also brought home the team title finishing in 1st as a team.

The Spartan varsity boys laced up their shoes to run next on the relatively flat Neligh course.  Austin Koenig, senior, ran in for a 3rd place finish in 16:54.  He was chased in by three runners from a tough Osmond team.  This would come back to haunt the boys team in the team standings.  Seniors Cory Lechtenberg and Evan Reiman were next in line for the Spartan runners.  Lechtenberg placed 7th in 18:01 and Reiman 9th in 18:24.  Sophomore teammate Isaac Koenig wasn’t too far behind Reiman, placing 12th with an 18:37.  Brayden Almgren, sophomore, ran in under 20 minutes with a 19:44 in 25th place.  Kody Roth, senior, zoomed in for 31st in 20:34.  Joshua Kersch, sophomore, had a solid race running a 20:55 and landing in 36th.  Nathan Kaczor, junior, came across in 49th with a 22:54 time.  Sophomore Trevor Brooks placed 51st in 24:02.  And junior Joseph Hiatt finished in 53rd with a 24:47.

This was the first meet Boyd County had competed with Osmond and the orange pack over took the Boyd Boys for the championship plaque.  Osmond finished 1st with 26 points.  Boyd County was only 5 points behind for 2nd with 31 points.  Neligh-Oakdale didn’t follow too far behind for 3rd with 40 points.

Junior High runners were next to step on the course.  Natasha Zeisler, 8th grade, found herself in the front of the girls pack.  She won the meet with 9:31 time.  7th grader Zoe Kaczor found herself in 15th place with a 12:25.  Fellow 7th grader Nathan Koenig came in 5th place for the JH boys.  He clocked in at 9:29.

The Spartan XC team will find themselves on the course again in Creighton on Thursday, Sept 20th and the following Thursday, Sept 27th in Atkinson for the West Holt meet. These are the final regular season meets for the Spartans.  The NVC meet will be held Friday, Oct. 5th in Bassett and Districts will be held on Oct. 11.  At the time this article was written the location of districts was still unknown.


Boyd County XC Meet


Boyd County Cross Country hit their home course Thursday, Sept. 6th, and in case you missed it here are the results for your Spartan runners.

The varsity girls’ team placed 2nd overall. They were led across the finish line by senior Axell Bosio. She placed 4th in 21:39. Teammate Kaci Mashino, sophomore, medalled in 14th with a 25:03. Senior Emma Stahlecker brought home the 15th place medal in 25:16. Ashley Hausmann, junior, came in just after Stahlecker in 16th place in 25:31. Andrea Hipke, sophomore, rounded out the Lady Spartans in 17th with 25:47 time.

The varsity boys once again faced West Holt in a very competitive competition. Senior Austin Koenig finished 2nd ahead of four West Holt runners. He crossed the finish line in 16:54. Fellow senior Cory Lechtenberg came in just after the West Holt runners in 7th with a 18:00. Isaac Koenig, sophomore, finished in 10th place in 18:18. Evan Reiman, senior, came in 12th with 18:22. Brayden Almgren, sophomore, ran through the shoot in 21st in 19:47. Senior Kody Roth ran 25th in 20:09. Josh Kersch, sophomore and Joseph Hiatt, junior, sprinted to the finish neck and neck for 32nd and 33rd respectively. Kersch ran 21:13 and Hiatt 21:14. Junior Nathan Kaczor came in 35th with a 22:30. Trevor Brooks, sophomore, crossed the finish in 39th with a 24:28 time. The boys’ varsity team were runner’s up against the tough West Holt Huskies team.

Next on the course were the junior high runners. 7th grader Nathan Koenig placed 6th in the boys’ division with a 10:11 for the 2500 meter course. On the girls side Natasha Zeilser earned herself the silver medal, finishing 2nd for the girls in 10:28. Zoe Kaczor, 7th grade, came in at 14th with a 13:04.

Thank you to everyone who helped us run another successful home meet! We are blessed to have an amazing community who make this meet run smoothly! Look for the Spartans to compete again on Friday, Sept. 14th in O’neill and Thursday, Sept 20th in Creighton.

Ainsworth XC Meet

facebook_1535720472753Seven Spartan runners brought home medals from the Ainsworth meet on Thursday, August 30, 2018. The first medal of the day went to senior Axell Bosio. Bosio, an exchange student from Italy, placed 13th in her first cross country with a time of 24:05. Ashley Hausmann, junior, ran 33rd with a 30:06. She was followed closely behind by teammates Kaci Mashino, sophomore, 35th with a 30:24, senior Emma Stahlecker in 36th with a 30:25 and sophomore Andrea Hipke in 37th in 30:48. Lorena Acua, also a senior exchange student from Italy competing in her first cross country meet ever, ran in with a time of 36:10 in 47th place. The Lady Spartans placed 5th as a team.


The next race of the day brought home four medals in the boys’ varsity division. 4th place went to senior, and new comer to the sport, Austin Koenig. He clocked in at 19:01. Fellow senior Cory Lechtenberg fought for a 9th place finish in 19:54. Evan Reiman, also a senior, ran in with sophomore Isaac Koenig. They finished 16th and 17th respectively. Reiman’s time was 20:22 and I. Koenig’s was 20:23.

Sophomore Brayden Almgren came across the line in 22:31 which landed him in 33rd. He was followed closely by senior Kody Roth in 34th with 22:36. Joseph Hiatt, junior, finished in 43rd with a 23:36. Joshua Kersch, sophomore, ran the 5K course in 24:45 and placed 50th. Teammate Nathan Kaczor, junior, was 7 seconds behind Kersch. Kaczor placed 51st with a 24:52 time. Sophomore Trevor Brooks rounded out the 10 man Spartan Squad in 65th with a 28:32.

After placing four runners in the top 20 the Spartans eagerly anticipated the team standings. Ainsworth and West Holt have always been tough competition and this meet proved no different. Ainsworth, led by first place runner Ben Arens, placed 1st in the team standings with 26 points. They also had 4 runners in the top 20. West Holt came in 2nd with 36 points. They placed 5 runners in the top 20. The Spartans walked away with 3rd place with 44 points for the day. These three teams combined had 13 of the top 20 finishers in the boys’ race. Once again setting up the boys’ district as one to watch!

The junior high runners added to the medal count. Natasha Zeisler, 8th grader, placed 5th in the junior high 1 mile competition. She came in with a 7:09 time. Zoe Kaczor, 7th grader, ran her first competitive mile in 9:05. Fellow 7th grader, Nathan Koenig, came in 8th in the boys’ junior high mile. N. Koenig was the only 7th grader to place in the top ten!

The next meets for the Boyd County XC team are as follows: Sept 6th Boyd County Invite at the Butte Golf Course at 4:15. Neligh on Monday, Sept 10, and O’neill on Friday, Sept. 14th. Check the school website for details!
